  • 1/2 cup sour cream (room temperature)
  • 1 cup butter (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup shortening (Crisco)
  • 6 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F (177C) and prepare three 6-inch cake pans with butter, flour, and parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda in one bowl. In another bowl, mix milk, sour cream, and vanilla extract.
  3. Using a mixer, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Gradually add whisked egg whites while mixing.
  4. Alternate adding the dry mixture and milk mixture into the butter mixture until just combined.
  5. Divide batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 3035 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes in pans for 1520 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
