Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (110F)
  • cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Zest and juice of 2 medium lemons
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast; let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Gradually add to the yeast mixture along with melted butter, lemon juice, and zest.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm spot for one hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down the dough, roll it into a rectangle, spread butter on top, sprinkle with sugar mixed with extra lemon zest, then roll tightly into a log.
  5. Slice the log into pieces (about one inch thick) and place them in a greased baking dish. Cover again and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 350F (175C) and bake for about 25 minutes or until golden brown. Drizzle with icing made from powdered sugar and lemon juice before serving.
