  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 4 ounces German chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup homemade German chocolate frosting

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine half of the heavy cream and cocoa powder over medium heat until boiling. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 seconds.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the chopped German chocolate until melted and smooth. Add the remaining cream.
  3. In the same pan, warm whole milk, sugar, and salt until hot (not boiling).
  4. Beat egg yolks in a small bowl; slowly whisk in warm milk mixture before returning it to the saucepan.
  5. Cook over medium heat until thickened (about 170F). Strain this into your chocolate mixture; add vanilla.
  6. Cool in an ice bath and refrigerate for at least one hour.
  7. Freeze in an ice cream maker per manufacturer instructions, then fold in frosting.
