  • cup breadcrumbs
  • cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • cup dry white wine (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyre or Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375F (190C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, garlic, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  3. Shape mixture into 1-inch meatballs and place on a baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 20-25 minutes until browned.
  5. In a skillet, heat olive oil and butter; add sliced onions and sugar, cooking until caramelized.
  6. Add flour to onions; stir in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce; simmer for 5 minutes.
  7. Combine meatballs in the skillet with the onion sauce; top with Gruyre cheese and cover until melted.
  8. Garnish with parsley and serve hot.
