  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 0.25 cup minced onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1.5 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 slices toasted bread, crumbled
  • 7 buttery round crackers, crushed
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 3.5 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1.5 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce, divided
  • 0.25 cup milk, as needed
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat and sauté minced onion and garlic until soft.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine sautéed onion and garlic with ground beef, crumbled bread, crushed crackers, egg, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, and half of the tomato sauce; mix well.
  4. Gradually add milk until the mixture is moist but not soggy.
  5. Transfer mixture into a greased loaf pan and bake uncovered for about 40 minutes.
  6. Increase oven temperature to 400°F (200°C), add remaining tomato sauce mixed with ketchup on top, and bake for another 10 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C).
  7. Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving.
