Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb dried ziti (or penne pasta)
  • 5 cups marinara sauce
  • 1 cup whole milk ricotta cheese
  • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese
  • 812 slices provolone cheese
  • cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • Sea salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375F (190C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Saut the chopped onion until softened (about 3-4 minutes), then add minced garlic and season with salt and pepper. Cook for another minute.
  3. Add marinara sauce to the skillet and bring it to a gentle simmer.
  4. Meanwhile, in a large stockpot, boil salted water and cook the ziti for 12 minutes less than package instructions for al dente texture.
  5. In a small bowl, mix ricotta cheese with the egg and half of the Parmesan.
  6. Drizzle olive oil in a baking dish and layer half of the cooked pasta, followed by half of the marinara sauce, dollops of ricotta mixture, slices of provolone, and half of mozzarella.
  7. Repeat layering with remaining ingredients before topping with remaining Parmesan.
  8. Bake uncovered for about 30 minutes or until hot and bubbly.
